“Local conservation heroes” honored in Northern Virginia
Arlington, Va. – At an annual gathering of not-for-profit conservation and community groups today, leaders of Virginia’s largest environmental organizations will recognize elected officials and volunteers for their work to promote “green communities” in Northern Virginia. Jay Fisette, a member of the Arlington County Board of Supervisors was named a guest of honor for his work as president of Virginia Municipal League. In that role, Fisette spearheaded the creation of the GoGreen Initiative (http://www.gogreenva.org/), a friendly competition among local governments and school districts to improve recycling rates, energy efficiency and environmental performance. Native Plants Sanctuary and Wildlife Habitats Display Garden
A new aesthetic: Landscape design which includes healthy outdoors with native plants, no harmful chemicals and habitat restoration and a beautiful natural look The main goal of this garden is to enlighten the homeowners to the beauty of Virginia native plants and to inspire them to incorporate native plants into their own home gardens. Other goals of the garden are to show how mature native plants can attract wildlife to include variety of birds and butterflies and beneficial insects. Restoring Habitats
During the Columbus Day weekend, a group of volunteers from the Broadlands community met at Mill Run Elementary school to plant 24 Virginia native plants.

Broadlands Nature Center
The Broadlands Nature Center offers year-round programs to the residents of the Broadlands. The Audubon Naturalist Society and the Broadlands HOA have partnered to provide nature programs for the community. To register, call the HOA office at 703-729-9704 or email naturalist@broadlandshoa.com to reserve your place in the program.
